Chancellor Helmut Kohl of Germany has reassured Israel that his country would continue to use its political and economic weight to support the peace process.

The chancellor made his remarks last week at the opening of his speech during a major parliamentary debate on the government budget.

“We hope that the government, the Parliament and the people of Israel will continue on this road” of peace, Kohl said, adding that the slain Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was correct to say that peace is the only path for Israel and its Arab neighbors to take.

The chancellor also predicted that Rabin would be remembered as one of the most outstanding personalities of the 20th century.
