Fritz Kuhn, leader of the German-American Bund, today was sentenced by General Sessions Judge James G. Wallace to serve from two-and-a-half to five years in prison for larceny and forgery charges arising from embezzlement of funds from the Bund. He was convicted by a jury on Nov. 29.
In passing sentence, which was relatively low in view of the possible 15 to 30 years maximum, Judge Wallace explained: “I am sentencing this man not as a rabble-rouser but as a small-time thief and forger. I am not going to make a martyr of this man. I am not going to punish him for shouting his hates from the rooftops. Some people don’t like that right in this country, but I love it. There are plenty of other hate-dispensers in this country — red, black and white; right and left.”
