The Milan newspaper Corriere della Serra, commenting today on the new Pontiff’s selection of the name John, stressed that the last Pope to bear that name was a moderating influence with respect to the Inquisition and had recommended justice and tolerance toward the Jews. It said that the Jews had always found in him a refuge from popular fanaticism.
