An appeal urging the establishment in the United States of temporary havens for Jews who can still be rescued by the War Refugee Board was sent to President Roosevelt today under the signatures of more than seventy prominent Christian leaders, including governors of eighteen states; Frank Murphy, Associate Justice of the U. S. Supreme Court, Owen D. Young, chairman of the General Electric Company, Nicholas Murray Butler, president of Columbia University, Robert Gaylords, president of the National Association of Manufacturer, William Green, president of the American Federation of Labor, Alfred E. Smith, former Governor of New York , and many other prominent personalities.
“It is a moral obligation of the United States and all other freedom-loving nations to erect temporary havens where the refugees may find sanctuary until conditions in their native lands enable them to return and take up their lives in the atmosphere of respect and decency and charity that our certain victory will create,” the appeal said.
