Ludwig Lewisohn, author of “Up Stream” and associate editor of the “Nation” was denounced by Milton B. Campbell, chairman of the Americanization Committee of the Chic Department of the American Legion” following an address by Lewisohn before the Germanistic Society here.
Lewisohn is alleged to have stated in his address that America’s present spirit, if continued, would end with a complete denial of the value of ideals. He is charged also with having spoken depreciatingly of the ability of President Harding and former Governor Cox and to have lauded German ideals.
“Can you conceive of a German statesman with but the average mentality of an American statesman?” Lewisohn is alleged to have asked.
Chairman Campbell in referring to the speech said that Lewisohn had “insulted every American who died in France, every disabled soldier who lies in a hospital today and every man who fought in the American Army”.
