Hitler is not solving unemployment, he is destroying the unemployed, is the startling charge made by G. Harrison Brown, European representative of the Chicago Committee for the Defense of Human Rights Against Nazism, in his first public statement here following his arrival from London.
“Germany is controlled entirely by a gangster regime,” he said, in explaining that the country has been made a “cultural desert,” and is being ruled by drug addicts, murderers and mentally diseased.
“Hitlerism could not have gained control had it not duped the bulk of the German workers. Hitlerism may be said to have ridden to power largely on the backs of a bewildered, economically miserable and befuddled proletariat.
“Nazi Germany is surely preparing for war. Perhaps the irony of Nazi ambitions may be that the very war for which preparations are being made will destroy Hitlerism.”
CITES CASE OF DOCTOR
Discussing the medical profession in Germany, Mr. Brown said that “the Jewish doctors were by far the best doctors in Germany. I think anybody who knows Germany will confirm that.” He then related the case of a Nazi leader who was desperately ill and in immediate need of an operation. A well-known Jewish surgeon was called and ordered to perform the operation. The man’s life was saved and Brown comments, “when it comes to the big guys, they don’t care to trust themselves to the mediocre Nazi medical men who have supplanted the wonderful Jewish physicians.”
Religiously, Mr. Brown explained, Germany has gone back to the Middle Ages, and not so many weeks ago the religious concord, which stated that the Nazis were for religious freedom of conscience, was denounced by second-rank leaders and local leaders in many parts of Germany.
“Hitler is modeling Germany in his own image,” Mr. Brown warned—”The image of a brutalized moron. Individual freedom is non-existent.”
FEVERISH WAR PLANS
“Hitler himself is a nonentity,” Brown continued. “He has no more personality than a new boot—he is a channel—ten minutes after he’s been on his feet speaking he has imbibed all the emotion of the people and those people are crazy about him. They are told in every note and key that he is a god, and he throws this emotion back at them and that is the function of the reputation he has. Today he has colossal power and not one idea what to do with it.”
“Germany in the last year has bought well over ten times its formal annual supply of nickel. Nickel is indispensable for armaments at present, particularly for poison gas containers.”
The fight against anti-Semitism, Mr. Brown declared, is the cause of every decent individual of every decent element in every country, irrespective of color or creed or nationality, and even of political faction, and the best and most effective way to deal with the Hitler government is to boycott Nazi-made goods.
