Liqudation of Relief Organizations Endangers Reconstruction Work in Russia

Much of the reconstruction work in Russia that has been carried on by the various relief organizations will be endangered and in some cases entirely wasted because of the lack of funds to carry on some of the activities that were started, according to information that has reached the central office of the “Ort” here. The same is true of other parts of Eastern Europe.

Twenty-six professional schools maintained by the “Ort” in various parts of Russia are being closed because the “Ort” is unable to support them, now that the appropriation, which the Joint Distribution Committee used to make to the “Ort” for that purpose, will no longer be forthcoming. The faculties of these schools are being dismissed and the pupils will be left entirely helpless because they have not yet learned their trades, and are unable to earn their livings.

The central office of the “Ort” also reports that there is much distress in the Jewish farming communities because the “Ort” has been unable, as in the past, to supply them with seed and implements for the Spring sewing which is now going on in Russia. The situation in that respect is so critical that a special conference has been called to consider it.
