Max Reinhardt, noted Jewish theatrical director, whose productions were famous throughout Europe and the United States, died here last night at the age of 70.
First in Germany and then in Austria, where he was born in 1870, Dr. Reinhardt was instrumental in revitalizing the theater in the early part of the century and in the ‘twenties. He gave new productions to classics which had been neglected and sponsored the works of new playwrights such as Ernst Toller. His companies toured the continent and he also directed dramas in English in London and New York. Since 1934 he had spent most of his time in the United States.
