Members of the U.S. House of Representatives told a State Department official that any declaration of a provisional Palestinian government would be a mistake. “President Bush must make it clear to Chairman Yasser Arafat and the Palestinian people that no state will ever be declared, provisionally or otherwise, unless the violence ends,” Rep. Benjamin Gilman (R-N.Y.), chairman of the subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia, said at a hearing Tuesday.
