Gifts to Palestine effort, amounting to $20,000 have been made during the summer by Nathan Straus, the veteran Jewish philanthropist. His donations with characteristic spontaniety are described in a letter he wrote to Justice Louid D. Brandeis on August 1st from Highmount, New York in which he said:
“My dear Justice Brandeis:
“When my son Nathan, Jr. visited me last week we discussed the work of rehabilitation in Palestine, which is so successfully carried on under your guidance by the Palestine Development Council.
“I wish to contribute my modest share towards your work, with keen regret, that I cannot make it more at this time. I herewith enclose ten thousand dollars, to be applied by you wherever in your judgment it will be of the most benefit.”
To this Mr. Straus added that he had sent a similar amount to Hadassah for special milk work in Palestine.
In answer to Justice Brandeis’ acknowledgment, Hon. Nathan Straus, Jr. wrote:
“I only regret that we cannot contribute more in both time and money to the Palestine Development Council. In the type of work it is doing lies in my belief the hope of real economic upbuilding of Palestine and I am not unmindful of the fact that it was you who charted the course on which it is sailing”.
