The conduct of Field Marshal Fritz Krich von Mannstein, former German commander in Poland and the Ukraine, was “immaculate” in reference to treatment of civilians, R.T. Paget, British lawyer defending von Mannstein at his trial here before a British military court, asserted today.
Among the 17 war crimes charges on which von Mannstein is being tried is responsibility for the deportation and murder of Jews in Poland and the Ukraine. In an attempt to justify his contention that von Mannstein protected the civilian population of Poland, including the Jews, the defense attorney cited the case of a Gestapo officer who was arrested and ordered court-martialled by von Mannstein’s headquarters for having 50 Polish Jews shot, Reuters reported.
