A Nazi official accused of being a leader of the Nazi security police which dealt with the “Jewish question” in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, was arrested at the airport here in connection with the murder of 5,000 Yugoslavian Jews during World War II. Herbert Meier-Andorfer, 56, an Austrian citizen, was taken into custody by police on arrival at the airport on a flight from Africa.
He was detained on a warrant issued by the district attorney’s office in Vienna. German authorities said they are now considering an Austrian request for extradition. The accused had worked in Hanover for a number of years as a tourist guide for a West German travel agency. He is charged with participation in the murder of a number of Jews while serving in Belgrade as an S.S. lieutenant, specializing on the “Jewish problem,” in 1942.
