Nazi enthusiasts suffered defeat here yesterday when a liberal board of directors for the Cangallo German School was elected by a vote of 131 against 61.
The Cangallo School, which is named after the street on which it is situated, is one of the oldest and largest German schools in the country and has behind it a record of thirty-five years of liberal and progressive educational activity. For some time the Nazi element here, encouraged by the ease with which they have “coordinated” other German schools, where they have installed brown-shirted imported instructors, have looked for an opportunity to gain control of the Cangallo institution. Liberal groups, spurred on by charges of Nazism in the schools in a number of newspapers recently, organized to defeat them in yesterday’s election. If the Nazis had won, they would have gained a foothold in the very heart of the city’s Jewish district.
The defeat of the Nazi ticket at the Cangallo School is regarded as a personal rebuke to von Therman, German envoy here, who is making a decided effort to “coordinate” all German institutions in this country.
