Nazis Renew Bombings

The fate of Austria trembled in the balance today as Austrian Nazis began a new campaign of bombing outrages in retaliation for the hanging of Otto Planetta and Franz Holzweber, Nazi leader of the putsch which resulted in the killing of Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss.

The two men, the first of the 144 Nazis involved in the capture of the Chancellery, were condemned by a court martial and hanged. Both went to their death shouting “Heil Hitler.”

For the first time since the Dollfuss coalition government came into power and the battle against the Nazis began, Nazi terrorists have suffered death for activities against the regime. Ironically enough, only after Chancellor Dollfuss himself was killed by a Nazi was the death punishment invoked against the Nazis, although many Socialists were shot or hanged for their part in the Socialist uprising last February.

The Nazis have threatened that if a single member of their party were put to death by the Dollfuss regime Catholic priests would be executed in retaliation and Catholic churches beginning with St. Stephens Cathedral in Vienna would be blown up.
