Sixty thousand dollars in initial donations was subscribed here last night as the local drive of the $1,200,000 Jewish Welfare Campaign was launched by Rabbi Jonah B. Wise, national chairman of the United Jewish Appeal. In an impassioned address Rabbi Wise hailed the unity of American Jewry in the work to relieve German Jewry and the development of Palestine.
The first $50,000 donated in the welfare drive has been allocated directly to the United Jewish Appeal.
At a luncheon given yesterday by Aaron Rauh, president of the Jewish Federation, four anonymous contributions of $5,000 were announced by Irvin Bettman, chairman of the initial gifts committee. Rabbi Ferdinand M. Isserman spoke at the luncheon.
Emil Mayer, general campaign chairman, presided at a dinner last night in Temple Israel House. Robert V. Friedman is head of the men’s division of 750 workers, who plan to conduct the most intensive citywide campaign since the World War. One of the largest contributions announced last night was $2,800 by the Maccabeans Zionist Club.
