A “Coalition of Democratic Zionists” has been formed here in order to counteract what its leaders term us “the corruption of Zionism” by the present Israeli government and the “retreatism from original labor principles” by the State of Israel. The Coalition, formed last week, comprises individual members of Habonim labor Zionist Youth, Hashomer Hatzair, Americans for Progressive Israel and unaffiliated Zionists, according to Steven Berkowitz of Habonim, a founder of the Coalition.
In announcing the group’s formation, its leaders made public a “Charter of Reaffirmation. For the love of Israel; For the Love of Justice and Peace,” which is being circulated throughout North America for endorsement and signatures. The Charter calls for in part, “the preservation of our democratic and humanistic values,” “religious pluralism and tolerance,” forging a society in Israel “that provides for political and social democracy as well as for economic justice,” and “Zionist advocacy of self-determination for the Palestinian people.”
