The next president of the World Zionist Organization will be elected by the General Council or Actions Committee, the governing body of the movement between congresses, the standing committee of the 27th World Zionist Congress decided today. The decision came on a 16-to-three vote with six abstentions. The Labor Party and the two general Zionist factions–World Confederation of General Zionists and World Union of General Zionists-voted for the proposal. Mapam, the left-wing labor party, abstained and the right-wing Herut cast a negative vote.
To implement today’s decision, the Jewish Agency Executive and the presidium of the actions committee will elect a joint committee to prepare the election which is expected to take place early next year. Meanwhile, an amendment to the WZO constitution is being prepared which will authorize the actions committee to elect the WZO president, As the constitution now stands, only the Congress can elect the president.
