The swastika emblem of the Nazis will be conspicuous by its absence at the third annual German Day celebration August 5, at United Singers’ Park, Springfield.
Announcement to this effect was made by the sponsoring organization, the German – American League of Essex County, which declared it will show only the Stars and Stripes and the old imperial black, white and red.
Hermann Schmidt of the Newark Turnverein, who heads the arrangements committee, declared:
“The German-American League is an American organization and has no part in political matters. We had a controversy over these matters last year, and I am decided not to let it happen again. We will show the flag under which I and many others of us fought for Germany and the flag of our adopted country. There will be nothing more.”
The “controversy” which Schmidt referred to occurred at the German Day celebration last year when the outing grounds was “bombed” with Nazi literature. Officers of the League themselves insisted upon complete investigation. One air pilot was ordered “grounded” for a while, but aside from this nothing more has come of it to date.
