Political sources said here today that the non-aligned summit meeting just concluded in Algiers contributed to increased hostility and tension in the Middle East at a time when world diplomacy is moving to end international conflicts. There was no comment from official quarters on the meeting of 76 non-aligned nations which ended last night with draft resolutions condemning Israel along with the United States for supporting Israel. The final texts of the resolutions were not released immediately.
They are known, however, to have called on members of the non-aligned bloc to take individual and collective economic and political measures against Israel and demanded that the U.S. stop delivering arms to Israel. But the conference stopped short of declaring a total economic, political and diplomatic boycott of Israel as demanded by some of the Arab delegates. Political sources here said the conference had followed the most extreme Arab formulations without taking into account the basic elements of international co-existence such as negotiations, the establishment of peace and pacts. The conference’s declarations on the Middle East were termed a “negative anachronism.”
