Construction of a $2,000,000 synagogue by the congregation of the Euclid Avenue Temple of Cleveland in the neighboring suburb of Beachwood has been made possible by a ruling of the Ohio State Court of Appeals to the effect that the village could not refuse a building permit.
The decision came after nearly two years of litigation which began when the Mayor and village council of Beachwood refused to permit the Temple to build on a 31-acre site. The Court of Appeals rejected the village council’s plea that the village would lose $25,000 in annual income because the Temple would be tax exempt under state and law and also threw out the council’s contention that the Temple would not serve the public welfare.
