The British administration in Palestine will not be liquidated in piecemeal fashion, but continue in full operation until an as yet undesignated date when it will be terminated in its entirety, a government spokesman said today.
He revealed that 30,000 troops have been withdrawn from Palestine and that areas in which army camps are located have been gradually evacuated since Sept. 26. More than 5,000 acres, representing 10 percent of the land held by army installations, will be released by the end of the month. He said, however, that this withdrawal was not the beginning of the general evacuation, but merely part of the demobilization policy aimed at reducing British garrisons throughout the world by 400,000 men by Christmas. The spokesman stated that the evacuation would cost $72,000,000, but that the government does not contemplate selling any more property to raise funds, in addition to parcels on the Haifa waterfront.
