A fifty percent remittance of the tithe on the Winter crops was today announced by the Palestine government. This ruling however excepts reputed owners of acreage who themselves did not cultivate their land but rented it out to tenant cultivators. This special measure is seen as relief for the Arab and Jewish settlers whose crops have been several times damaged by a plague of field mice.
It is officially learned that the reduction in the tithe is also due to the as yet unpublished findings of the Palestine agricultural commission headed by assistant treasurer Johnson. A recent meeting of Arab and Jewish colonists in the Afuleh district urged a slash in the tithes. Unsettled agricultural conditions in some sections of the country are also believed to have had something to do with it.
