Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat may be willing to postpone his plans to declare Palestinian statehood by six months. The Israeli daily Ha’aretz reported that Arafat, who originally planned to make the announcement on May 4, is willing to negotiate with the United States about setting a new date. Sources close to Arafat reportedly said he hopes that getting U.S. agreement on a new date would pressure Israel to advance the stalled peace process.
