Palestinian officials maintained that an international peacekeeping force would be necessary if a cease-fire is to be effective. But Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon rejected the idea, telling members of his Likud Party that Israel’s opposition to peacekeepers is “a clear position and there has never been a question about this.”
