Pope John Paul II condemned violence in the Middle East. In his New Year’s message, the pope called on Muslims, Christians and Jews to seek peace. “The cry of blood calls to God from that land, the blood of brothers spilt by brothers, all sons of the same Patriarch Abraham, sons, as are all men, of the same Holy Father,” he said.
