Pope John Paul II recalled during a visit to Austria the “unspeakable suffering” of the Holocaust and told church dignitaries and political leaders, “We cannot necessarily presuppose that all roots of this injustice have been irretrievably weeded out.” Reconciliation with the Jews is a fundamental duty for all Christians in Europe, the pontiff said at a gathering at Vienna’s Hofburg Palace.
