Cardinal Pacelli, Papal Secretary of State, said in a cablegram to the Lord Mayor’s meeting on refugees today that Pope Pius “looks with humane, Christian approval upon every effort to show charity and give effective assistance to all those who are innocent victims in these sad times of distress.”
The Salvation Army told the meeting that it was taking 1,000 refugees from Germany. The meeting heard Lord Mayor Sir Frank H. Bowater, Lord Rothschild, the Archbishop of Canterbury and other prominent speakers plead for aid to the refugees. Declaring the Jews did not harbor primitive ideas of revenge, Lord Rothschild asserted that Palestine alone could not solve the Jewish problem. He promised that money contributed to the interdenominational Lord Baldwin Fund for Refugees would not be spent in Germany. The Archbishop of Canterbury urged prompt and continuous action by all governments to solve the refugee problem. The meeting was attended by notables from the City of London and by many other prominent leaders, including Cardinal Hinsley.
