The community of Maranos in Bregansea who have recently officially returned to Judaism have started the erection of a synagogue here.

The president of the synagogue, Jose Furtado Montanha, in a communication in behalf of the descendants of the victims of the Inquisition, urged the municipality of Bregansea to name a street in the city after Orobio de Castro, the famous Marano leader who because of the Inquisition fled to Amsterdam, where he became the leader of the community. A memorial tablet has already been placed on a street in the town.
