Maj. Gen. Yitzhak Rabin, Israel’s new Ambassador to the United States, was the guest of honor at a reception here today by the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. Rabbi Herschel Schachter, chairman of the conference, greeted Gen. Rabin with the traditional Hebrew welcome in the name of the 22 national Jewish agencies which comprise the conference. It was Gen. Rabin’s first appearance before an American Jewish group since he presented his credentials to President Johnson at the White House Tuesday.
In welcoming Ambassador Rabin, Rabbi Schachter reported that synagogues throughout the country would be asked at Sabbath services this weekend to join with the people of Israel in the week of national mourning for the sailors of the Israeli submarine Dakar now being observed in Israel. The submarine disappeared in Mediterranean waters in January. It was declared officially lost yesterday.
