The Israel Government will grant facilities to private investors who are prepared to erect factories and work centers for employing new immigrants in Galilee and in the Negev, Labor Minister Golda Myerson told representatives of workers’ exchanges today. Among places listed by Mrs. Myerson for development with the aid of private capital are Lydda, Ramleh, Beersheba and Ascalon.
David Horowitz, Undersecretary for Finance today estimated that the total Israel imports for the current fiscal year would run to about $224,000,000 while exports would total approximately $30,800,000. This enormous gap, he said, called for unremitting production and intensification of output. Otherwise, the population must prepare for considerable curtailment of essential commodities, more stringent austerity and heavier taxation, he stated.
The government’s building program for 1950 has tentatively been fixed at 20,000 units, it was announced today. Plane are being worked out, however, for additional dwellings. The present decision calls for the construction of 16,500 units in cooperative, collective and private villages, and 1,500 in Jerusalem, Beersheba and Tiberias, the same number for the suburbs of Tel Aviv and Haifa and 500 for Afuleh and Naharia. This year’s program, started in June, is proceeding satisfactorily, the government said.
