Rabbi Noach “Lider” Zaludkowski, famous cantor, Talmudist and for more than 40 years chief cantor of the main synagogue at Kalisz, Poland, is dead at the home of his son here at the age of 72. Born in Dvoretz, Grodno district, Lithuania (formerly Russia) Rabbi Zaludkowski was the son and grandson of rabbis.
At the age of 13 he received his rabbinical degree from the Volozin rabbinical seminary. Gifted with a marvelous voice he turned his attention to hazonuth (liturgical singing). Not only is he known as one of the greatest of cantors but he was also the teacher of scores of other cantors and choir leaders. Hundreds of his compositions are now sung in the greatest Orthodox synagogues of Europe and America.
Rabbi Zaludkowski’s entire family is intimately connected with the synagogue. His widow is the only daughter of Rabbi Joseph Moshe of Metshet, the last of fourteen consecutive generations of rabbis. His eldest son, Elijah Zaludkowski, is the chief cantor of Temple Shaarey Zedek, Detroit. Two other sons, Joseph and Jacob, are cantors in London and Liverpool.
The name “Lider” came to Rabbi Zaludkowski as a result of his having been cantor in the town of Lida. He was also cantor in the leading synagogues of Vilna, Brest-Litovsk and Wolkowysk.
