Yitzhak Rabin’s assassin says his only regret is that he did not kill the Israeli prime minister before the Oslo peace accords with the Palestinians were signed.
Yigal Amir spoke Monday to the media before a court hearing on the state’s request to keep the right-wing nationalist separate from other jail prisoners.
“I have no intention of seeking a pardon or amnesty, and I don’t want anyone to ask for it on my behalf. I did what I did to prevent something,” said Amir.
Amir made his comments two days after an estimated 150,000 people took part in a memorial rally in Tel Aviv to mark the fifth anniversary of Rabin’s the assassination.
Amir shot Rabin as the prime minister left a peace rally on Nov. 4, 1995.
During the hearing, a prison authority official said easing Amir’s conditions and allowing him contact with other prisoners could endanger his life.
The official said that while recent memorial services for Rabin were taking place, several other prisoners had threatened to behead Amir.
