Reconstruction of Jewish Communities in British Zone of Germany Proceeding

A review of reconstruction efforts in the British gone of Germany published today by the Jewish Committee for Relief Abroad discloses that the Jewish community in Essen now comprises 150 persons whose average age is 47. The community’s synagogue and cemetery chapel, which were destroyed by fire during the Nazi riots in November, 1938, are being rebuilt with a loan granted by the municipal authorities, the report said, adding that the trial of those responsible for the 1938 conflagration will be held soon.

The Mainz Jewish community consists of 79 persons, chiefly people who had inter-married with Gentiles. Most of the people in Mainz are over 60 and there are only three children, In Cologne, because of the shortage of building materials, progress on the rebuilding of the Jewish hospital and synagogue has been very slow.
