Rabbi Leo Baeck, president of the Reichsvertretung der deutschen Juden, the supreme representative council of German Jewry, has issued a statement urging the need of peace in the ranks of German Jewry.
“This indispensable cooperation of the various movements in German Jewry,” he writes, “demands from each of you two things—to hold fast to your own convictions and to respect the convictions of others. He who ceases to express his own convictions clearly, openly and honestly, and especially he who ceases to permit the convictions of his opponent to be expressed clearly, openly and honestly, both offend against this fundamental of cooperation. It is an imperative duty to insist, to the detriment of no one and the advantage of no one, that this cooperation, upon which everything depends today, should be realized and observed by every section in Jewry.
“If this is done, as I confidently hope, the constructive work of the Reichsvertretung will no longer be prejudiced and rendered futile by internecine warfare.”
