N.Y.) cautioned Congress yesterday that while he has been “encouraged” by Egyptian President Anwar Sadat’s move to reduce the Soviet military presence in Egypt, “we still must wait to see if this development will lead to a lasting peace in the Middle East.” Peyser said in a speech on the House floor that “other recent statements” by Sadat “have demonstrated this is an appropriate time for the United States to reaffirm its commitment to support the State of Israel.”
