The first direct report concerning the situation of 20,000 Jewish refugees crammed into a ghetto in Shanghai by the Japanese authorities was given in Port Elizabeth today by Laura Margolies, representative of the Joint Distribution Committee, who is among the Americans repatriated from Japan on the Swedish ship Gripsholm under an exchange arrangement.
A reception for the Jewish repatriates was given by the Jewish community of Port Elizabeth when the Gripsholm reached there. Speaking at the reception, Miss Margolies described the pitiful plight of the Jews in the Shanghai ghetto and emphasized that they live only on the aid which they receive through neutral countries and from the Red Cross.
General Moshe Cohen, British-born Jew who was reported killed in the Sino-Japanese war, is also among the repatriates. At the reception in Port Elizabeth he spoke highly of the Chinese treatment of Jewish refugees from Europe and emphasized the Jews must demand a seat in the council of the United Nations. He has been a colorful figure in China and has lived in the United States and Canada.
