A report that Dr. von Truetzchler, member of the German delegation at the reparations talks here, is a former member of the Nazi party was denied today by Dr. M. Frohwein, one of the leading members of the delegation. Professor Franz Boehm, head of the German delegation, similarly pointed out that Truetzchler was very helpful in gathering the material for the German-Jewish reparations talks and that without his help the German delegation could not have come to the talks here.
In denying the report that Truetzchler was a Nazi, Dr. Frehvein said that the former was a diplomat who had served in the German Foreign Office under the democratic pre-Nazi regime and he had been drafted into the service by the Nazis when they took over the government. He emphasized that Truetzchler had nothing to do with the Jewish question under the Nazis and was used by them only as an expert on various matters of law.
Professor Boehm revealed that Truetzchler did not want to come to the German-Jewish talks here. “However,” he added “I considered his help so invaluable and necessary that it was at my urgent and personal request that he was assigned to our delegation and that he agreed to come to work with us.”
The report stating that Dr. Truetzchler is a former Nazi was published in the Frankfurter Rundschau, one of the leading newspapers in Germany. The paper said that he served under Nazi Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop and that a parliamentary committee in Bonn advised against sending him as a German representative to any country because of his Nazi record.
It was established here today that Dr. Truetzchler is a veteran career diplomat who was one of the German delegates to the League of Nations under the Weimar Republic. He was also a member of the German delegation that drew up the contractual agreements with the Western Powers last month.
