Rudolf Vrba, one of five Jews who escaped Auschwitz, died March 27 in Vancouver at the age of 82. Along with fellow prisoner Alfred Wetzler, Vrba escaped Auschwitz by hiding for three days in a pile of lumber near the camp’s fence, using tobacco and gasoline to keep the camp’s guard dogs away.
