Russian President Vladimir Putin announced he would nominate a Russian Jewish community leader stabbed in a Moscow synagogue last July to become a hero of the state. Word of Putin’s plan to honor Leopold Kaimovsky came during the fourth annual Jewish choral competition in Russia’s capital and one day after Putin was elected president.
