A bill which if enacted would prohibit the schechita, the Jewish method of slaughtering animals for food, is now under consideration in the Constitution Committee of the Bavarian Diet.
In the language of the bill slaughtering animals without previous stunning would be prohibited. Ten Societies submitted petitions to the Diet in support of the bill. The All German Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is among the petitioners.
The leaders of the Jewish community in Bavaria submitted a memorandum in opposition to the bill, quoting the opinions of experts to the effect that the schechita method is humane. In the Committee the measure was vigorously supported by the nationalist deputies who demanded the prohibition in accordance with a Diet decision of 1926, while the Social Democrats, joined by the Bavarian Volkspartel Deputies, fought against it.
