Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar, of Peru, who replaced Kurt Waldheim January 1, said Thursday that as Secretary General he will maintain “great interest in the Mideast” and its problems. Speaking at his first press conference since his election, the Secretary General said in response to a question that he does not intend, at this time, to send any emissary to the Mideast to explore the situation there. “The time is not ripe for such a mission, ” he said.
