Gen. E. L. M. Burns, Chief of Staff of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization, has cabled a full report of the Israel-Egyptian Mixed Armistice Commission’s action on the Egyptian seizure of the Israel vessel Bat Galim to the UN Security Council, it was announced here today. The security Council earlier this month recessed consideration of an Israel complaint against Egypt’s blocked of the Suez Canal until a report could be obtained from the MAC on the Bat Galim incident.
It was learned here today that Israel has no intention of lodging a new demand for release of the Bat Galim as a result of the MAC’s resolutions, which in effect upheld Israel’s position in the matter. Israel feels that the entire matter, including a demand for the release of the ship and the liberation of the ten crewmen, was covered in the original complaint at the Security Council. Israel has hopes for speedy completion of the item before the Council because of the clear-cut decision rendered by the MAC.
Meanwhile, it was learned, at the end of the MAC meeting last Thursday, an Israel delegate informed the Egyptians that he was authorized to meet and discuss with them measures for combatting infiltration of Israel territory from the Gaza strip. The Egyptians agreed in principle to such a meeting, but could not fix a date.
