The Security Council will meet tomorrow to consider renewing the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) in the Sinai for another three months, it was announced today. Secretary General Kurt Waldheim, in his report on UNEF submitted yesterday to the Council, recommended that the UNEF mandate be extended and noted that Egypt has indicated it will not object to the renewal of the mandate for an additional three months.
Waldheim also reported that Israel stated that she favors the renewal of the mandate for a period of no less than six months “on the grounds that UNEF is an integral part of the disengagement agreement of January 18, 1974.” The Secretary General himself did not recommend any time period for the mandate’s extension, which is due to expire April 24.
In his report, which covered a period from Oct. 13,1974 to April 12, 1975, Waldheim noted that UNEF’s present strength is at 4200 men. Although the UNEF area of operation has remained quiet in the last six months, the report pointed out nonetheless that “the situation in the area as a whole remains fundamentally unstable. Whether it is possible to maintain the present quiet and prevent a new outbreak of hostilities will depend on the prospects of achieving further progress in the search for a just and lasting settlement of the Mideast problem, as called by the Security Council.”
