House Minority Leader Gerald R. Ford said today that he had asked the Speaker of the House, John W. McCormack, to arrange a legislative schedule for early October in such manner as to avoid any important business or votes on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. He said Mr. McCormack had agreed to study the congressional calendar with a view to making the necessary arrangements.
Rep. Ford said that “out of respect for Judaism, one of our great religions and a cherished aspect of the American heritage, the Congress should re-arrange its business to assure that all Congressmen of Jewish faith are freed from any need to choose between legislative business or attendance of devotional services with their families.”
