Further investigations by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency correspondent with reference to the reports that Jews in the Ukraine maintain a large self-defense army discloses that while remnants of an independent self-defense army still exist they are numerically insignificant, conditions in the Ukraine having improved to the extent that there is no need for special Jewish self-defense.
A general “samoborona” (self-defense corp) exists as a quasi-government institution with a membership recruited from all classes and parties, registered in many towns, and given arms to aid the military if the need arises.
For the rest, the Soviets have a large Red Army force in the Ukraine, first because of the danger from the Polish – Ukrain ian frontier, and secondly, because of banditism which crops up, despite all efforts to suppress it.
