The session yesterday of the National Assembly broke up in disorder after the Jewish deputies walked out in a body and were attacked by nationalist deputies who tried to block their exit.
The scene followed the rejection by a majority of anti-Semitic deputies of the Jewish proposal calling for immediate consideration of the recent racial outbreaks in Warsaw and other places in Poland, in consequence of the execution and trials of Catholic prelates in Warsaw.
The urgency of the question was stressed by Jewish deputies who demanded that the Diet proceed to discuss it regardless of other business. Deputies representing the minority nationalities and the socialists supported the plea, which was soutly resisted by the Center and other nationalist deputies.
Accusing the national democratic press of having fomented the recent disturbances, Deputy Hartglass, a leading Jewish member, appealed to the Assembly to sift the causes of the recent outbreaks in which scores of Jews were injured and much property destroyed. Jewish deputies, seeing their hopes of a full discussion frustrated, walked out in a body as a protest. It was at this point that the disturbances began. Nationalist deputies stationed themselves at the doors to prevent the Jews’ departure. As the latter sought to force their way out, nationalists with uplifted fists fell upon them and a free-for-all fight ensued. After the Jewish deputies had left the hall Peasant Party and other liberal deputies came to the defense of the mistreated Jews, scoring the nationalists for their behavior.
