Sen. Alfonse D’Amato (R-N.Y.) is urging Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan to block the proposed merger of the Swiss Bank Corporation and Union Bank of Switzerland in the United States. D’Amato, who chairs the Senate Banking Committee, said the merger should not be allowed to take place until the banks provide Holocaust victims and their heirs a full accounting of assets deposited during the World War II era. Shareholders of the two banks this week overwhelmingly approved the merger, first announced in December.
