Shaare Zedek is one of the oldest Jewish Congregations in the city, having been organized in 1837. Downtown it was known as the Henry Street “Schule” and was the most fashionable synagogue on the East Side. For 20 years its home was in West 118th Street and its present synagogue was erected eight years ago.
