Representatives of the National Jewish Community Relations Advisory Council (NJCRAC) and the Synagogue Council of America (SCA) agreed today to “contest vigorously” a suit filed last week in Federal Court here challenging the constitutionality of shechita (Jewish ritual slaughter) laws. Following a two-hour “emergency meeting” here, the Jewish leaders agreed to create a law committee to advise the organizations on the best way to fight the suit, a NJCRAC spokesman said. He said he could not predict when the case would come to court. The suit, filed by Henry Mark Holzer, charged that “special” laws for shechita violate the church-state separation required by the First Amendment.
