Conditions of Jewish life in Bulgaria are worsening as a result of the economic difficulties facing the country at large and signs of anti-Semitism are again noticeable, according to a private report received here today from Sofia. The report adds that Bulgarian Jews are gradually losing their contacts with Judaism under the impact of Communism.
There are now some 4,500 Jews in Bulgaria, most of them in Sofia, the report says. With emigration at a standstill those who remain are being absorbed within the general mass, it asserts. The report states that Jewish religion and tradition are tolerated and many Jews attend Sabbath services in the synagogues. The Chief Rabbi remains Dr. A. Hananel. Only one Jewish paper, “Evreesci Vesti,” is still published, and it attacks Israel and American Jews in every issue.
